Zooplankton is a collective term for animals that are drifting with the currents. They do not perform photosynthesis like phytoplankton (microscopic plants) but they consume phytoplankton, other zooplankton species, bacteria and/or detritus. The images of zooplankton were taken by Katja Peijnenburg and Erica Goetze under a microscope during a research cruise of the Atlantic Meridional Transect programme.
